Everyone among us has heard the phrase, "Technology is not bad for you. It is neutral. It's how you use it that's good or bad".
The thing about this age is that it's not true. Technology isn't neural anymore. There's a team of top scientists, psychologists and designers working right now to get you to stay on their app longer. To get you to click or scroll some more. They use the understanding of the human brain to make you do stuff that benefits them. I would say that's not very 'neutral' at all. 'Attention" is the currency of these companies and they are constantly using techniques to catch your attention and keep it. The positioning of every button, the layout design, the accompanying sounds are all thoroughly tested to maximize human attention before being used in a product.
So, I put forward the argument that technology is not neutral. It's being used against you, especially your smartphones. Unless you actively wrestle control back from these devices/apps, you will stay hooked to them, because that was the purpose they were built for. Turn off notifications. Keep your phone away from you. Check your phone rarely.
